Linux vs. Unix

Linux vs. Unix- A lot of people ask Best Linux Web Hosting what’s the difference between Linux and Unix if Linux was based off of Unix. There are some differences and that’s why Best Linux Web Hosting wrote this Linux vs. Unix tutorial. Linux vs. Unix!

We have already gone into great depth on Best Linux Web Hosting about what is Linux. Since this is not a Unix website we haven’t discussed it that much. Before we can compare Linux vs. Unix we must first give you some information on Unix.

Unix was introduced in 1969 by a group of AT&T employees after they worked on a prototype operating system that was too costly. Since the initial release of Unix it has grown to be one of the top three operating systems. The Unix operating systems are widely used in both servers and workstations. The Unix environment and the client-server program model were essential elements in the development of the Internet and the reshaping of computing as centered in networks rather than in individual computers. Unix is now controlled by The Open Group and is open source.

So here is a list of the differences between Linux and Unix.

  • Unix requires a more powerful hardware configuration while Linux doesn’t. Linux will work on all types of hardware foundations.
  • Unix is the foundation for a number of operating systems, with Linux being the most popular one. Many of the newer programs are designed with Linux in mind.
  • Linux is great for small- to medium-sized systems. Unix is still the dominant choice when you are running a large business that has more than 10 CPU’s. Unix can process the information more effectively than Linux can at the size.
  • Linux is free while Unix can be costly. For some of the extravagant Unix operating systems you could be looking at $500,000!
  • Unix is geared toward specific applications while Linux is a standard base operating system.
  • Unix is more consistent than Linux is.
  • Unix commands are more stable and very rarely change.
  • Linux is more secure that Unix. Because Linux is an open source program, more people have their hands in it and can detect security threats sooner.

Those are some of the main differences between Linux and Unix. This is a pretty touchy issue when you talk to computer wizards because some say Linux and Unix are the exact same. Best Unix Web Hosting doesn’t believe that because there are some differences. While there is no doubt that Linux came from Unix it is different. A great way to think of this is by comparing Windows to DOS. Windows is an offspring of DOS just like Linux is to Unix!
